With Her Nose Stuck in a Book

Meet our Board Member, Heather Akins DPT

Where do you find inspiration?

Movement is meditation for me. I feel most creative and inspired when I am moving my body through dance, exercise, yoga or a walk in nature.

What encouraged you to volunteer as a board member with Madhukara?

Service to others is where I feel the deepest connection with my soul. Madhukara keeps me rooted in the community, the ability to provide food / assistance to communities / persons in need holds a special place in my heart.

Besides your work with Madhukara, how else do you serve the world?

I am a pelvic health physical therapist and am passionate about my work. I am fascinated by the intricacies of the human body, the mind body connection and how the physical body moves us through our day.

What advice would you give to a new volunteer?

Every little bit helps, if you can’t be present to serve there are so many other ways to help. You may not be there physically but your contribution is part of the collective spirit present for each and every person we serve.

A genie grants you one wish, what do you wish for?

For healthcare to be a basic human right not associated with exorbitant costs.

If you could be any fictional character, which character would you be? And why.

Belle from Beauty and The Beast, she is kind to everyone she meets, she is strong, not afraid to speak her mind, stand up for what she believes and she LOVES reading books. I channeled my inner Belle by reading 65 books in 2023 ♥️ 📚

A song that inspires you?

The Architect by Kacey Musgraves
